How to Capture Graduation Milestones in August | Kansas City Missouri Senior Photos
Wait... August Senior Photos?!
So, you’re sweating through the last days of summer, maybe frantically buying school supplies or getting ready for fall sports to start. Meanwhile, your senior just realized they still need to get those graduation photos done. Sound familiar?
You're not late. Actually, August is a totally awesome and often overlooked time to capture senior portraits. Most folks think you have to squeeze everything in during the spring or early summer, but truth is, we're not on a deadline here. Senior sessions don’t expire. Except maybe after the official graduation march lol
As someone who photographs seniors year round at photoalli, I’ve seen sessions come together beautifully at all times of the year. And hey, if you waited until now? That just means we get some really fun late summer light, maybe even a few sunflowers, and a little space to breathe before the school year flips into full-on chaos.
That No-Man’s Land Between Summer and School
Here’s the deal - August is this weird little window where everything is kind of shifting. Graduation feels both super far away and way too close. There’s this mix of excitement, nerves, and just trying to hold onto the last bits of "normal." I totally get it.
That’s why I love photographing seniors during this time. It’s not just about a cap and gown or a strict checklist. It’s about capturing someone right in the middle of the in-between - full of personality, hope, and style. It makes for some really authentic, relaxed images... especially when you’re not sweating deadlines.
And for the record? Every senior session isn’t going to feel like a red carpet shoot. It doesn’t need to. Realness is the goal. We’re not selling toothpaste here - we’re celebrating life.
Tips for An August Senior Session That Feels Like YOU
Bring clothes you feel great in
Seriously. Don’t feel like you need to buy a whole new wardrobe just for a photo session. If you’ve got jeans that make you feel like a boss, or a graphic tee that shows off your style (or your love for frogs or anime or whatever), bring it. The goal is you, not a mannequin.
Bonus tip: think about texture and movement. A flowy dress? Great. your fave band shirt? Love it. What matters most is that you feel good and can move easily.
Bring multiple outfits! We’ll mix it up between casual and semi-dressed-up if you want.
Pick a location with personality
You are not required to stand in a forest. Unless you want to.
August is perfect for exploring some more unique spots while we still have long daylight and easy weather. Want to shoot in an arcade? Downtown alleyway? A field with wildflowers? Your backyard with the dog hopping in? I’m there.
If you’ve got a place that feels you (like the diner you always hit after football games), let’s make it happen.
Not sure where to go? I’ve got plenty of favorite spots around St. Joe, Cameron and Kansas City Missouri. Some classic, some totally weird-in-a-good-way. I like thinking outside the box
Too hot for all your photos to be outside, I have that problem solved to with my STUDIO
Don’t stress the “perfect pose” thing
This one’s big. You don’t have to model or know what to do with your hands. One of my jobs as your photographer is to help you feel relaxed and confident, without over-posing.
I give simple prompts that let you move around and be natural.
Not everything has to be serious. If you laugh mid-pose, perfect. If you blink weird, we’ll just reshoot it. No big deal.
This is real life, not a catalogue.
Parents: Let it be fun
I see this all the time. Parents mean well, but start micromanaging the session - every hair flip and shirt tuck. My advice? After you help your senior get dressed and out the door, trust the process.
Your kid wants photos that actually feel like them (not just what you picture hanging over the fireplace).
You’ll get gorgeous, frame-worthy shots either way - maybe even more so when everyone chills out a bit.
My goal is album and artwork PLUS the social media images
Be unapologetically you
Yes, it's a corny phrase. But in sessions, it matters. Bring the skateboard. Wear the boots you've had forever. Let your freckles shine. Whether you’re shy or loud or total goof, we'll get something that captures that beautifully.
Why Senior Photos Matter (Even in August)
Here’s the cool thing senior portraits capture more than just what you look like right now. They show who you are right now. And that includes the quirks, the killer side-eye, the favorite band tee, the tiny nervousness about what's next.
Images like these are the ones that end up sticking around for decades. In picture frames. On grandma's piano. As a Remember when…. moment when you’re showing your own kids someday.
So whether it's August, December, or the minute before graduation, take the time to document this.
