Glam Gowns vs. Everyday Attire: Choosing Your Perfect Maternity photo session style
Let’s talk maternity outfits...the glam, the casual and everything in between
So, you've scheduled your maternity session near Kansas City (yay!), and now comes the next big question: What the heck are you gonna wear?
You might be picturing one of those stunning, flowy gowns with a dramatic train and wondering if that’s too much. Or maybe you’re thinking, “I just want to wear my favorite sweater and call it good.” The thing is, both are totally valid.
I’ve had clients walk into a session wanting to feel beautiful and bold after some of those rough pregnancy months where you just don’t feel like yourself. One recent mama told me she felt the opposite of “glowy,” but the moment she stepped into a glam dress, you could just see her light up.
Some mamas feel better in their own cozy outfit brought from home. Going over the top is just not them no matter what.
No matter how you feel or your style or just doing something different the results? Magical.
The Style Struggle is Real (But It Doesn’t Have To Be)
Let’s be honest - figuring out what to wear while pregnant can feel like a full-time job. Between hormones, body changes, and endless Pinterest ideas, it’s easy to feel stuck between looking amazing and staying true to how you feel most comfortable.
I get it. Some days, putting on socks feels like a workout. So the idea of squeezing into a gown might feel...not ideal. But here's what I tell my clients: You don’t have to pick just one version of yourself. You get to show up as the beautiful, complex, glowing (even if you don’t feel it!) human that you are - sparkles, fuzzy cardigans, and all.
At photoalli, we always plan for options. Whether it’s two different glam gowns or a mix of one gown and one personal outfit, there’s room to play and feel like the best version of you. See more maternity looks here
How to Decide What to Wear for Your Maternity Photos
1. Do What Feels Good On You
Seriously. If a fancy dress makes you feel powerful and radiant, go for it. If it feels itchy and not “you,” skip it. Pregnancy is not the time to shove yourself into someone else’s idea of “photo worthy.” Wear the outfit that makes you feel confident - and yes, that includes leggings if that’s your thing!
Needless to say, I’ll help you pick the options that complement your look and flow with the location. We can talk through it all during planning, so no need to overthink it.
2. Mix It Up (You Don’t Have to Choose Just One!)
Why settle for one look? I always encourage clients to bring more than one outfit. A lot of my maternity clients say things like, “I want something extra, but I also want to be comfy and myself.” Bringing multiple outfits is the best of both worlds. We’ll pick spots in the session to switch looks, and you’ll end up with a versatile gallery that shows your full glow-up.
Bring both the gown and the outfit you lounged in while binging Netflix last weekend - they both tell your story.
3. It’s Not Really About the Clothes
Here’s a little truth bomb: your maternity session isn’t about the outfit. It’s about you. Your growing family. This wild, amazing moment in your life. My job is to help you feel like yourself, and honestly? When that happens, the photos always come out perfect.
I do my best to enhance and document you, not turn you into someone you don’t recognize. Whether you’re bare feet in a field in Cameron Missouri or dressed like a goddess with extra tulle and wind blowing your hair in my Studio - it’s all part of the magic.
So...What’s Right for YOU?
You’ve got options. Thankfully, with photoalli, you never have to pick just one version of you. Maybe you lean all in on a glam experience or maybe you’re happiest just being yourself in the everyday. Most clients end up somewhere in the middle, and that’s totally okay. There’s no wrong way to show up. We can even book more than one maternity session to really be able to focus on all the looks you want to achieve. A cozy maternity session in my studio near Cameron Missouri or a flowy dress in a park in Kansas City, what matters most is that you feel great. And when you feel great, it absolutely shows in your photos.
