St Joseph Missouri Newborn Photographer Compares: Lifestyle vs. Posed Newborn Photos

So... Which One Should You Choose?

Here's a question I get a lot: "Should we do lifestyle or posed newborn photos?"

And honestly? My answer is almost always the same: it depends on your baby.

Not in a wishy-washy way. In a very real, practical way. Because a sleepy, curled-up newborn is going to have a totally different session than a wide-awake, wiggly two-month-old. And that's completely okay!

The good news is, you don't have to stress about picking a "side." I'll always try to work in a little of both, and we let the baby lead the way.

Here's the Thing About Newborn Sessions

A lot of parents come in with a specific vision. Pinterest boards, saved Instagram reels, the whole thing. And I love that energy!

But sometimes the baby has other plans. (Shocking, I know.)

That's not a problem. It's just how newborn sessions work. The baby's age and mood during the session play a huge role in what's actually possible, and I'd rather work with your baby than try to force something that isn't going to happen.

No pose is ever forced here. Baby-led posing is always the main focus.

What's the Actual Difference?

Posed Newborn Photos

  • Classic, curled-up positions you've probably seen a lot

  • Usually works best with sleepy, younger newborns

  • Beautiful for those timeless, detail-focused shots

  • Wraps, props, and snuggly setups

Lifestyle Newborn Photos

  • More natural and relaxed - think snuggles, not setups

  • Great for older babies or babies who just aren't into being posed

  • Captures real moments and natural interactions

  • Works really well when siblings are involved too

What About Older Babies or Toddler Siblings?

This comes up all the time. Parents bring in babies who are a little older than the "typical" newborn window and get nervous about it. And then they also stress about how their toddler is going to act around the new baby.

Here's my honest take: I won't turn a baby away because of age. We just go with the flow. If a pose works, great. If the baby just wants to be snuggled, we do that instead.

And toddlers? I just let them interact with the baby the way they're comfortable. Some kids want to hold the baby immediately. Others need to warm up. That's totally normal, and those in-between moments are often the best ones in the whole session.

A Few Things to Know Before You Book

  • I take my time. There's no rushing here. A good newborn session needs patience, and I've got plenty of it.

  • No forced poses, ever. If your baby isn't comfortable, we move on and try something else.

  • Age isn't a deal breaker. Bring your baby in. We'll figure it out together.

  • We'll try a little of both. Even if we lean more lifestyle or more posed, I always attempt to work in some variety so you walk away with a good mix.

Why This Actually Matters

The goal of a newborn session isn't to check off a list of poses. It's to capture your family in this specific moment - one that goes by way too fast.

Whether your baby sleeps through the whole thing or decides to be fully awake and opinionated, those are your real moments. And those are worth documenting exactly as they are.

You don't need a perfect session. You need your session.
