Selecting the Perfect Photographer for Your Engagement Photos | Cameron, Missouri

Capture Your Unique Style and Personality with Confidence

Your engagement session is more than a photo op—it’s a celebration of your love story, a chance to capture your personality as a couple, and the perfect warm-up for your wedding day. Finding the right photographer can make all the difference in creating images you’ll treasure forever. So how do you choose the one (you know, besides your actual fiancé)? Let’s break it down.

1. Find a Style That Speaks to You

Every photographer has a different approach—some go for dramatic lighting and editorial flair, others focus on candid moments and true-to-life colors. As you're scrolling through portfolios, notice what you naturally gravitate toward. Are you drawn to dreamy, golden-hour portraits? Do you love vibrant city shots or romantic countryside settings?

Look for consistency. A strong portfolio should feel cohesive, not like a Pinterest board of random trends. Bonus points if their editing style feels timeless—you want to love these photos ten years from now, not just next Tuesday.

I tend to enjoy many different styles and looks. I keep the vibe timeless and true to life but I do like being able to offer storytelling at the bar along with posed in the park and everything in between!

2. Make Sure Your Personalities Mesh

This is a big one. Your engagement session should feel fun and relaxed, not awkward or forced. Look for a photographer who makes you feel at ease, whether that’s through humor, gentle guidance, or just good vibes all around.

Scroll through their website or social media to get a sense of their personality. Do they seem like someone you could laugh with while frolicking through a field? Or someone who will keep things moving when you’re trying not to freeze in your dress coat in January?

Schedule a call or consultation if you're unsure—getting along with your photographer is just as important as loving their work.

I have been taking engagement and wedding photos off and on for over 15 years. Being able to offer unique lighting expertise, guided posing and my ability to keep things going smoothly, really can help take the pressure off photos.

3. Ask the Right Questions

Once you've narrowed it down, don’t be afraid to ask a few key questions before booking:

  • How many engagement sessions do you shoot each year?

  • What’s your posing style—guided, candid, or a mix?

  • Can we include pets, props, or specific locations that are meaningful to us?

  • What happens if the weather’s bad?

  • How long after the session will we receive our photos?

Photographers love when couples come prepared—it shows you're invested in making the experience great, too.

4. Consider Their Experience (and Flexibility)

An experienced photographer will not only know how to work with different lighting and locations—they’ll also know how to coach you through the session. If you’re feeling nervous or unsure how to pose, a seasoned pro will help you feel confident and natural in front of the camera.

At the same time, look for someone who can adapt. Whether your pup decides to chase squirrels mid-shot or your fiancé is a little camera shy, your photographer should roll with it, not panic.

5. Read Reviews and Look for Testimonials

Couples will tell you the truth. Browse Google reviews, Facebook recommendations, or client shoutouts on Instagram. Look for mentions of how comfortable the couple felt, whether the photographer was professional and responsive, and how happy they were with the final gallery.

If the words “patient,” “fun,” and “nailed it” come up often, you’re probably on the right track.

6. Don’t Forget About the End Goal

Sure, the session is fun—but what are you going to do with the photos? Whether you want to display them at your wedding, turn them into save-the-dates, or just plaster your walls with love, make sure your photographer offers options that align with your vision. Some may include print rights, while others may have heirloom-quality products you didn’t even know you needed.

It’s Not Just About the Photos ( I mean it is, but it isn’t)

When you choose the right engagement photographer, you’re not just booking someone to take pictures—you’re booking someone to help tell your love story. Find a person whose work you adore, whose personality clicks with yours, and who can guide you through the session with ease. That way, your engagement photos won’t just look good—they’ll feel like you.
