Pregnancy Photos for Every Body: Choosing a Maternity Photographer Who Helps You Feel Seen

So you're pregnant, you're thinking about maternity photos, and somewhere in the back of your mind a little voice is saying "but will I actually like how I look?" That's such a common feeling, and honestly, it makes total sense. You want to feel like yourself - just a more beautiful, glowing version of yourself. You want photos that actually show how amazing a growing baby belly can look, without feeling like you're starring in someone else's photoshoot. That's exactly what we're here to talk about.

The Worry Most Moms Carry Into Maternity Sessions

Here's what I hear a lot: moms are worried the photos will just look like... everyday life. Like a regular Tuesday, just with a bigger belly. They want something that feels elevated and beautiful, but they also don't want to feel like they've been stuffed into something uncomfortable or styled into someone they're not.

And that's such a valid concern! You should feel like you - just the best version of you on a really good day.

One mom I worked with wanted to wear jeans and a t-shirt for her session. It was a hot summer night, and she wanted to be comfortable. She also wanted the photos to feel beautiful, and she didn't want the focus to be entirely on her - she wanted her family in the frame too. We made it work, and it was her session through and through.

What "For Every Body" Actually Means in Practice

A lot of photographers will say they photograph every body type, but what does that actually look like on a hot summer evening when a very pregnant mom just wants to wear jeans?

Here's what it means to me in practice:

Comfort comes first - always

If you're not comfortable in what you're wearing, it's going to show in the photos. I'd rather you wear something you feel good in than something you feel like you're supposed to wear for a maternity session. If that's jeans and a t-shirt, great. If it's a flowy dress, also great!

Hair and makeup can be a really worthwhile investment

If you're thinking about splurging on professional hair and makeup, it's worth it. It's one of those things that makes a big difference in how you feel walking into the session - and when you feel good, it shows up in every single frame.

Keeping it low-key is perfectly fine

Not every pregnant mom wants to be running around a field for an hour. Keeping the session easygoing and not overly active is something I think about when working with moms-to-be. We move at your pace. Full stop.

Posing that actually works for you

The goal is always to show how beautiful a growing belly can look - because it genuinely is beautiful - while making sure you feel relaxed and natural. Simple, easy poses that allow for real movement and connection are way more my style than stiff or overly formal setups.

What I Wish Every Mom Knew Before Booking

If you're self-conscious going into a maternity session, here's what I really want you to hear before you even reach out:

  • Your everyday look is the starting point, not the finish line. The photos won't look like a regular day. Good lighting, good posing, and a photographer who knows what they're doing will show you something you haven't seen before.

  • A growing belly is genuinely beautiful. I know that might feel hard to believe when you're tired and swollen and just want to feel comfortable. But maternity photos have this way of capturing something that you can't quite see in the mirror and that's kind of the whole point.

  • You don't have to choose between comfortable and beautiful. That mom in jeans and a t-shirt? Her photos were beautiful. Comfort and beauty absolutely coexist.

Why This Stuff Actually Matters

Maternity photos aren't just about documenting a bump. They're about capturing a moment in your life that goes by fast - sometimes really fast. Looking back at those photos later, you're not going to think "I wish I wore something different." You're going to see yourself at a remarkable, wild, beautiful time in your life.

The families and moms I work with want to feel seen - not just photographed. And that's what I genuinely care about creating for you.

If you've been on the fence because you weren't sure you'd feel comfortable or look the way you want to, I'd love to show you what's possible.
