Multi-generational Family Photos: St Joseph Mo Photographer

When Was the Last Time Everyone Was Together?

Think about it. When's the last time the grandparents, the cousins, the aunts and uncles, and the kids were all in the same place at the same time?

It doesn't happen that often. And when it does, someone's usually too busy chasing a toddler to grab a phone and actually capture it.

That's exactly why multi-generational family sessions are some of my favorites. The breakdowns, the laughter, the grandkids climbing on grandparents - it's a lot, and it is so worth it.

The Thing People Keep Getting Wrong

A lot of families talk themselves out of booking a bigger session before they even get started.

"Oh, it's too complicated." "Grandma won't want to do it." "It's too expensive for what it is."

Here's what I actually believe, and I don't hear enough photographers say this: it's never too late, and it's always worth it.

Aging parents, young grandkids, busy schedules, none of that means you missed your window. It just means now is the time.

What You Should Know Before You Book

It's for everyone - not just the parents and kids

Multi-generational sessions aren't just a "mom thing." They're for the whole crew. Grandparents, cousins, siblings, the whole extended family. Everyone belongs in the frame.

The cost can be split

This is the part nobody talks about! Families split the cost all the time. It makes a session like this way more accessible when you're not the only one chipping in.

It's a great yearly (or every-other-year) tradition

Think about how much changes in a year or two. Kids grow. Babies arrive. People move. A multi-generational session gives you a real, updated snapshot of your family at this point in time. Needless to say, those galleries become something you'll want to look at for decades.

The "chaos" is normal - and kind of the whole point

Kids will be kids. Grandparents might move a little slower. Someone will probably cry (maybe the adults). That's fine! The real, unfiltered moments are what make these photos feel like yours and not just another posed group shot.

You don't have to have it all figured out

Not sure how to coordinate outfits? Not sure how long it'll take? That's what I'm here for. I'll help you prep so the day feels easy and fun, not stressful.

Why These Sessions Actually Matter

Families have so many moments shared across generations - the grandkids with the grandparents, the cousins all piled together, the parents in the middle of it all - and those photos become something people hold onto for years.

The images from a multi-generational session aren't just pretty pictures. They're the kind of thing you'll want to pass down. They connect people across time in a way that a screenshot from someone's phone just can't.

If you've been waiting for the "right time" to get everyone together - this is your sign. It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to happen.

Let's Make It Happen

If you've been thinking about getting the whole family together for a session, I'd love to help you make it work.
