How to prepare for your family session
Saint Joseph & Kansas City Family Photographer
Who here puts a lot of pressure on yourself to have perfect family photos? Don’t be shy you can raise your hand, no one is watching, or maybe someone is watching and you look goofy with your hand in the air. But thats fine, that leads me to my first point for preparing for family photos. Don’t be afraid to be goofy.
Prepare to get silly.
Photos don’t have to be stuffy and stressful. There is no reason you cant just have fun with your family during photos. Talk with your kids (and I mean chat about it a lot, days or weeks before a session) get them used to the idea of meeting a new friend and going to a new location. Ideally, they then will be more comfortable meeting me. Tell them you are going on an adventure and are going to play and get pictures taken. We can sing and dance during photos and this will ideally loosen up kids and parents. Silly sounds and silly dancing can and will happen. You might be surprised with the sounds you make to get kids to smile.Blog Text
Prepare for the unexpected
This not only means to think about extra outfit changes, or snacks and drinks (kids are always hungry) but this means to expect your child to not act the way you think they will. Kids and babies are a whole ‘nother breed of human and rarely act like you think they will act. If you say they will behave one way, 9 times out of 10 they will do just the opposite. Trust me, I’ve seen it all. Kids being shy or kids being totally wild are all part of the deal and I will work with it. When kids are shy, you get those sweet moments of loves and snuggles. I try hard to be friend kids with out over stepping boundaries, and by doing so they can open up and be comfortable being them selves. That’s when the crazy can come out and kids can be wild and giggly. Weather we spend the majority of our time getting sweet family snuggles due to your child being shy or if the whole session is a wild adventure, your images will portray you child at this stage of life and will be a precious keep sake.
Prepare to get physical, physical (queue Olivia Newton John lyrics) lol
Based on the type of session you are wanting, in studio or outside/on location, there is an element of physical activity involved. Studio sessions with little ones that are starting to walk or crawl involve a decent amount of crawling around on the floor to retrieve them or keep them in the general area of the background. Outside sessions, may also involve chasing after a toddler, or running around with older kids. Having tickle fights or playing tag, tossing little ones in the air or swinging them around. Depending on the location however, be prepared to climb hills, or rocks or be in water, plan your shoes accordingly. So needless to say you most likely will be getting your steps in for the day.
